January -- 7:00am to 6:00pm -- Farmers and Artists Market -- A Non-profit community Farmers and Artists Market 7 days a week at the Sunshine Station. This is a great drive from Las Vegas or Pecos to exit 323 off I-25. After you have shopped at the Market there are other fun things to do further up on Highway 3; such as San Miguel de Vado Church, La Risa Cafe, Madison Winery, Villanueva State Park and more. January 1 -- Noon -- Polar Bear Plunge at Storrie Lake -- Local residents begin the New Year with a plunge in the chilly waters of nearby Storrie Lake. Event takes place on the Boat Dock of Storrie Lake State Park. For more information call (800) 832-5947.

January 8 -- Second Saturday Artwalk 2011 -- Second Saturday ArtWalk celebrates Las Vegas as a state designated Arts & Cultural District featuring Open Studios, Galleries, Readings, Live Music & more. Visit galleries, shops and restaurants in historic downtown Las Vegas. Enjoy the work of over 75 artists, including local painters, sculptors, jewelry designers, graphic designers, photographers, musicians, interior designers, writers, poets, santeros, media artists and graffiti artists. The ArtWalk is a monthly, authentic grassroots community art event presented by the artists, residents and businesses of Las Vegas. January 9 -- 1:00pm -- LVNWR: "Talking About Climate Change" -- Are you confused about the conflicting information you hear in the media about climate change science? Join Eileen Everett, Climate Change Educator with the NM Museum of Natural History and Science as we explore the science behind climate change. Eileen teaches classes at the Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge with the cooperation of the Friends Group. All interpretive talks take place at the LVNWR Visitor Center. Seating is limited to 40. January 14 -- 1:00pm to 7:00pm -- Before We Say Goodbye -- Before We Say Goodbye is a milestone Hispanic-American women film based on Highland University alumna Patricia Crespin’s play We Are Hispanic Women….OK? Highlands University and the Nat Gold Players produced the play locally. Crespin co-wrote and co-produced the film. Don’t miss this powerful, insightful film, and a chance to meet Crespin, producer Paul Davids, and lead actress Juanita Sena-Shannon at the public reception! Sena-Shannon wowed the Ilfeld audience with her Bless Me Ultima stage performance in October. Many Las Vegas residents, including other NMHU alumni, also star in Before We Say Goodbye. January 14 -- 7:00pm -- Seeing, Vision, and Leadership -- Paul Graves, a powerful speaker, established pastor and global executive, will be speaking at the United World College. This event will be held in the Kluge Auditorium. His talk will focus on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This event is free and open to the public. January 18 -- Noon to 1:00pm -- Healthy Woman -- Alta Vista Regional Hospital is hosting a free Healthy Woman education event in the AVRH Classrooms. Dr. Raymond Ortiz, Internist, will present on “High Blood Pressure: Warning Signs.” The free event begins with a light meal and refreshments at 11:45am with the presentation beginning at 12 noon, followed by a question and answer session. January 20 -- 7:00pm -- Glimpses of the Past: “The Stars Along the Santa Fe Trail” -- Fort Union National Monument, National Park Service announces its’ monthly “Glimpses of the Past” presentation “The Stars Along the Santa Fe Trail.” The program will be held at the CCHP/Santa Fe Trail Interpretive Center located at 116 Bridge Street. Have you ever gazed at the expansive sea of stars above and wondered what it was you were looking at? Join Ranger Ron Harvey Jr. for an exploration of the Southwestern nighttime sky and discover the stories and wonders that wait for you once the sun goes down. Weather permitting, participants will also have the opportunity to observe a multitude of these evening marvels through a telescope. Warm winter clothing is recommended. January 21 -- 8:00pm -- ‘Bring the Heat:’ New Mexico Magazine’s Annual Salsa Contest Rekindles the Fire -- Deadline for entry is February 1, 2011. A panel of three judges will evaluate the salsas in a blind taste test. In the event that a judge is unable to participate, New Mexico Magazine will appoint a qualified person. January 22 -- 10:00am -- Weatherization Demonstration and Sustainable Homes Tour -- This event is sponsoerd by Sustainable Las Vegas local chapter of the NM Solar Energy Association is free and open to the public. Demo and Maps are available at the Las Vegas Arts Council located at 140 Bridge Street. If you want to save money on your utlities, this is the event you should attend. January 23 -- 7:30pm -- JT & the Clouds with special guest Allison Russell -- New Moon Fashions will be hosting JT & the Clouds, with special guest Allison Russell of Po’ Girl, at our local Travelers Café here on the plaza in Las Vegas! Ticket Prices: $12 for adults; $6 for Children and students with valid ID. Many may know JT through his relationship with Po’Girl and the Be Good Tanyas, both of whom he’s written songs for and toured with. Now he and a 4 piece version of his band, the Clouds, are touring in Las Vegas. January 29 -- 5:00pm to 9:00pm Sharing is Caring: Halting Hunger and Homelessness -- UWC-USA will be hosting a community fundraiser for the Samaritan House. Come enjoy a night of international cuisine, a cultural performance emceed by Radio Personality and Principal Martha Johnsen, special activities, and a silent auction. All proceeds will be donated to the local Samaritan House in support of their mission to provide food and shelter to people in our community.
