August 1 -- 10:00am to 4:00pm -- Places With A Past, Historic Sites Tour -- The Places With A Past, Historic Sites Tour includes a tour of several of the 900 plus beautiful historic buildings in Las Vegas. There is also a tour of the Montezuma Castle. The Montezuma Hotel and Harvey House were built by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. This event happens at the Pecos National Historical Park. The Mass will be held at 10:00am at the Mission Ruins within the park. There will also be horno bread baking demonstrations and the regular park tours. Rated PG. Admission is FREE and open to the public! August 5 through 9 -- 9:00am to 5:00pm -- San Miguel/Mora County Fair -- Registration for this event will be conducted on August 5th. The San Miguel County Extension Office sponsors this event at the San Miguel County Fair Grounds. The Fair Grounds has a brand new building that houses animals and now has a new show ring. There is a livestock show and sale, indoor exhibits featuring sewing, gardening, and baking. Add a mud volley ball tournament, judging of steers, lambs, goats, poultry. Add rabbits and a chile cook-off and you have the recipe for a fun filled day for the entire family. There will be an opening reception on August 16 from 3:00pm - 5:00pm. Quilting has been revived in the last 20 - 30 years and is becoming more and more popular. August 20-- 7:00pm -- Presentation on History of Storrie Lake -- The National Park Service and Fort Union National Monument announces its’ monthly “Glimpses of the Past” presentation. The program will be held at the Citizen’s Committee for Historic Preservation/Santa Fe Trail Interpretive Center, located at 116 Bridge Street, Las Vegas. Park Ranger, Mike Sanchez, will discuss how Storrie Lake originated, and how it has developed over the many years as a New Mexico State Park. August 22 -- Candlelight Tours -- "Social Life at Fort Union" -- These tours begin at dusk (approximately 8:30 - 8:45pm). Ranger led tours stop at vignettes that are staged along the tour walk and are treated to local participants performing skits depicting everyday life at the fort during its hay-day. The tours last about 45 minutes so wear comfortable shoes and bring a jacket. Fort Union National Park is located 26 miles north of Las Vegas off Interstate 25. Reservations are required. August 28 -- 7:00pm Music from Angel Fire -- This year the concert will be held at Ilfeld Auditorium on the New Mexico Highlands University Campus. It is always well attended and is a favorite with the locals in the Las Vegas and surrounding areas. World-class chamber music is performed in 15 concerts featuring more than 35 international artists.
