February 2 -- 7:00pm -- April Verch Band -- The April Verch Band will be performing at the historic Ilfeld Auditorium on the campus of New Mexico highlands University. April Verch has studied at Boston’s Berkeley College of Music and simultaneously captured two fiddling championships – Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion and Canadian Open Fiddle Champion. April Verch is a champion Canadian fiddler, step dancer, and singer bringing together Celtic, jazz, folk, and bluegrass influences. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. A dinner and silent auction will precede the performance, starting at 6:00pm. Tickets are available at Love Music and Río Gallinas School. The concert is a benefit for Río Gallinas School. Río Gallinas School is a grade 1-8 expeditionary learning charter school in Las Vegas, New Mexico. In its sixth year, it is associated with the West Las Vegas School District. February 3 -- 6:00pm -- Second Annual Endowment Fund Raffle -- Raffle will be held at the official annual meeting at the museum. After the meeting Elmo Baca will give a talk on life in Las Vegas and one of Tom Mix's movies about Las Vegas will be shown, "Local Color". February 4 -- 6:30pm -- Plaza Hotel Wine Dinner -- The Plaza Hotel is holding its first wine dinner in the Foyer of the Ilfeld Ballroom. They will be featuring New Mexico wines which are also available in the Plaza wine and gift shop. Tickets are limited and are on sale at the front desk of the Plaza Hotel. The price is $45.00 per person and includes tax. It will include 4 courses, wine hand picked by Chef John and the winery's Executive Chef for each course. Menu will include: APPETIZER: Shrimp Charles on mixed greens; SALAD: Strawberry Spinach with warm bacon vinaigrette dressing; ENTREE: Gorgonzola Pine Nut Pasta with broccoli and chicken; DESSERT: Strawberry Crepes with whipped cream, and Flourless Chocolate cake! February 11 -- 5:15pm -- Sustainable Las Vegas -- The next meeting of Sustainable Las Vegas (the local chapter of the New Mexico Solar Energy Association) will be held at NMHU Donnelly Library, Rm# 325. Cary Lane of Energy Concepts will report on the Solar Power International Expo in Anaheim and update us on financial incentives and other opportunities for alternative energy uses. February 12 -- 7:00pm -- Voices for Creative Nonviolence -- United World College-USA announces upcoming speaker Kathy Kelly co-sponsored by Las Vegas Amnesty International Chapter 463. Kathy Kelly co-coordinates Voices for Creative Nonviolence, an organization that believes that "where you stand determines what you see." As a co-founder of Voices in the Wilderness, Kathy Kelly helped form 70 delegations, from 1996 – 2003, to bring medicine to children and families in Iraq. Kelly and her colleagues believe that non-violence necessarily involves simplicity, service, sharing of resources, and non-violent direct action in resistance to war and oppression. February 13 -- 9:00am to Noon -- H1N1 Vaccine Clinic -- Alta Vista Regional Hospital will host a free H1N1 Vaccine Clinic at the community center in San Juan/San Jose and at the hospital classrooms in Las Vegas. In addition, Pecos Valley Medical Center in Pecos has vaccines available by appointment. Pecos area residents may call (505) 757-6482 for an appointment. The Pecos Valley Medical Center is open from 8:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Friday. The H1N1 Flu Shot Clinics are free of charge, snacks and refreshments will be served. February 13 -- 11:00am to 2:00pm -- "The Empty Bowls" Luncheon -- The Empty Bowls Luncheon is an opportunity to enjoy good food and entertainment while supporting two organizations that provide food for the hungry in our community. Come and choose a handmade bowl crafted and donated by your neighbors and friends, enjoy a great meal, and take the bowl home with you. UWC students and community members will provide entertainment throughout the meal. Purchase a handmade bowl filled with soup and accompanied by breads, dessert and beverages for $20 and then take the bowl home with you. Purchase lunch or a bowl only for $10. February 13 -- Second Saturday Artwalk 2010 -- Now in its third year the monthly Artwalk features Open Studios, Galleries, Readings, Live Music & more. Visit open studios in historic neighborhoods, plus galleries, shops and restaurants downtown. February 16 -- 4:30pm to 7:00pm -- Annual Pancake Supper -- St. Paul's Peace Church is sponsoring its Annual Pancake Supper in Faith Hall....come and join us for this Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday Celebration!!! Tickets are $5 at the door, children under 12 are $3. This event has been held in our community for at least 70 years. Members donate all of the fixings and the money raised supports the church's ministries including are outreach in the Las Vegas and Bernal communities.

February 18 -- 7:00pm -- Glimpses of the Past - Buffalo Soldiers History -- In recognition of African American Month, Fort Davis National Historical Park Ranger, Timothy McElwain will present the history of the Buffalo Soldiers on Thursday February. 18th, 7pm at Citizens Committee for Historic Preservation at 116 Bridge Street, Las Vegas. The focus of McElwain’s program, entitled “Trash Can Cavalry: History and Memory,” is to mend the broken truth of history. Examples of myths that have been developed over time will be discussed, while doing so, highlighting the reality of history.
