April 3 -- 1:00pm Castle Tours -- The United World College is delighted to offer student led tours of the Montezuma Castle on designated Wednesdays and Saturdays. No reservations are required. Tours begin promptly in front of the Old Stone Hotel at 1:00pm and last approximately one hour. Parking is available near the Welcome Center. Please note that since the Castle serves as a residence and is used daily for college activities, it is not open to the public. All visitors must have a College guide. April 10 -- Second Saturday Artwalk 2010 -- Now in its third year the monthly Artwalk features Open Studios, Galleries, Readings, Live Music & more. Visit open studios in historic neighborhoods, plus galleries, shops and restaurants downtown. Enjoy the work of over 75 artists, including local painters, sculptors, jewelry designers, graphic designers, photographers, musicians, interior designers, writers, poets, santeros, media artists and graffiti artists. April 13 & 14 -- 9:00am to 3:00pm -- Kid, Kow, and More -- This is a fun event targeted at elementary kids and will be held at the Santa Fe Trail Event Center. The Center is located at corner of Airport Road and Road 250. The displays and demonstrations at this event show kids and the many contributions that animals add to our lives. There will be a dairy milking demonstration, a entomology (insects) display with a lecture, a sheep shearing demonstration and the rolling river water trailer. April 15 LCC Annual Hair Show -- The Luna Community College Annual Hair Show will be held at the nursing auditorium on the campus of Luna Community College. There will be two showings of the different hair styles. The first one is 12:00pm to 1:00pm. The show will also be featuring Locks of Love. The second showing will be held at 6:00pm. April 15 -- 7:00pm To the Loved Ones at Home -- Fort Union National Monument presents “To the Loved Ones at Home”, which consist of two new pieces of theater based on the letters of Fort Union soldier, Eddie Mathews and will be presented by theater students and professor Tim Crofton from the United World College at the Citizens Committee for Historic Preservation located at 116 Bridge Street, Las Vegas. William Edward “Eddie” Mathews was a private stationed at Fort Union between the years of 1870-1874. His letters provide rich descriptions of life on the Fort Union military post, during field campaigns, and on various military assignments. The monthly “Glimpses of the Past” programs are free of charge, in cooperation with Citizens Committee for Historic Preservation. April 17 -- 8:00am to 3:00pm United Community Day -- Habitat for Humanity – Las Vegas (HfH-LV) is partnering with UWC-USA to celebrate United Community Day. The event will serve as a benefit for HfH-LV, and will take place on the UWC-USA soccer fields 9:00am to 3:00pm. A runathon and duathlon will begin at 8:00am. United Community Day will feature a wide array of fun and informational activities for the entire family, including a 5K run, a children’s 1-mile run, a run-bike-run duathlon race, a garage sale, games and food booths, and booths displaying information on community and student services and activities. April 17 -- 9:00am to Noon -- Trek for Trash 2010 -- Trek for Trash and the City of Las Vegas are asking you to participate in this wonderful effort to keep our beautiful city clean. April 17 through 25 -- 7:00pm to 9:00pm Celebrate National Park Week 2010 with United World College-USA! -- April 17th through 25th is National Park Week, a week to celebrate YOUR National Parks.In honor of National Park Week 2010, United World College- USA will be hosting speaking events, as well as showing Ken Burns’ new documentary “The National Parks, America’s Best Idea” and more! The events will take place every evening in the Montezuma Castle. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated and will be given to America ’s National Parks. April 17 through 25 -- National Park Service Will Waive Entrance Fees During National Park Week -- Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today that all 392 national parks will have free admission during National Park Week, April 17 to 25. Parks will also offer additional family friendly activities and special offers on tours, lodging, food, and souvenirs. A listing of parks and promotions is available at www.nps.gov/npweek. Fort Union National Monument will kick off National Park Week on April 17-18 with its Living History Camp of Instruction. The public is invited attend the free two-day event which will include living history small arms demonstrations and activities by living history group the 3rd Regiment New Mexico Volunteers. National Park Week, a program of the National Park Service, is an opportunity to engage families and communities in America ’s Great Outdoors, reconnecting them with nature and creating close to home opportunities for people to get outside, be active, and have fun. The list of New Mexico royalty is extensive, including Miss New Mexico 2009 to Baby Miss Las Vegas 2009 and all in between. April 24 -- SynergyFest 2010 -- New Mexico Highlands University 's leafy Melody Park is the site for this year's event. Featured as in previous years will be music, sharing ideas on local and global sustainability, education about resource conservation, local commerce and food production. Contributors and sponsors for SynergyFest are sought. Contributors receive a variety of advertising from program covers, web pages and mention on radio spots to event space depending on amount of donation. Vendor spaces are available free to non-profits (donation appreciated), home-based artisans ($25), food providers and sustainability services that preserve our natural resources (both $75). April 25 -- 9:00pm -- High Flyers Kite Festival -- High Flyers Kite Festival will be held at Storrie Lake. It will be held in conjunction with the West Las Vegas Schools out door class program. The students make their own kites, there are speakers such as native story tellers, and a program that brings eagles and hawks. The caretakers of the birds give a talks and presentations.
