March 6 -- 6:30pm -- 15th Annual Fiesta de la Hispanidad -- The pre-show begins at 6:60 at the Historic Ilfeld Auditorium on the campus of New Mexico Highlands University. Tickets will be $4.00. This event is spnsored by Community First Bank, NMHU President James Fries and the School of Social Work. There will be live entertainment, refreshments and door prizes. March 6 - April 3 -- The Northern New Mexico Devotional Art Exhibition -- The Art Exhibition opens March 6 at the Ray Drew Gallery with a artist reception (5:00pm - 7:00pm) for the more than 20 artists. The Ray Drew Gallery is located on the first floor of the Donnelly Library on the NMHU Campus. The art may be viewed from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday - Friday and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on weekends. March 8 -- 1:00pm -- "Climate Change on the Artic Edge" -- Event takes place at the Las Vegas National Wildllife Refuge (Seating Limited to 40). Come and visit with the presenter: Will Mohoney, Volunteer for Earth Watch. Lecture and Presentation about the effects of climate change on the artic. March 11 through April 10 -- High School Art Exhibit/Competition -- This event is sponsored by The Las Vegas Arts Council and will be held at Burris Hall on the NMHU campus. The viewing hours are from 10:00am to 4:00pm. There will be a reception on March 14 at Burris Hall for the student, parents, and visitors (time will be announced closer to the event). This is a fun event for students and visitors to get a chance to view the works of some of Las Vegas's future artists. Last year there were about 100 entries. March 14 -- 10:00 am -- Second Saturdays Artwalk/Las Vegas,NM -- The New Mexico Arts and Cultural District is promoting this popular event. Second Saturdays Artwalk is an authentic grass roots community event taking place every Second Saturday in the three historic commercial districts of Las Vegas ( from the Plaza Park to the Depot). March 14 -- 1:00pm to 5:00pm -- The County Cinderella Prelininary Pagent -- The Pagent will be held at the West Las Vegas High School. Age divisions range from babies to young women. There will be different types of competition for the differnt age divisions. The pageant awards scholarships, cash and other prizes and these winners will advance to the state pageant in June. March 14 -- 8:00pm -- A Night of Health Laughter -- This is a benefit performance for El Centro Family Health, a key provider of affordable primary healthcare in Northern New Mexico. The presentor is Dr. William Westerman, Princeton University. Dr. Westerman is currently a full-time lecturer in the Princeton Writing Program teaching a course entitled “Refugees, Immigrants, and Social Justice”. March 19 -- 7:00pm -- Raising the Bar: Stories told and remembered -- Monthly "Glimpes of the Past" presentation by the National Parks Service and Fort Union National Monument. The event is held at the Citizen's Committee for Historic Preservation /Santa Fe Trail Enterpretive Center, 116 Bridge Street. This month's presentation will be given by the Honorable Judge M. Christina Armijo. She will share stories about the District of New Mexico which is one district within the federal Tenth Circuit. March 21 -- 1:00pm -- Castle Tours -- The United World College is pleased to provide free, student-led tours of the Montezuma Castle. While the tour is free, donations to the college are certainly appreciated. Tours begin promptly at 1:00pm and last approximately one hour. They begin in front of the Old Stone Hotel on the lower campus. Reservations are not necessary for the tours. March 21 -- 3:00pm -- "Musings from the Woods with Mary Stuever" -- Event takes place at Tome on the Range, 158 Bridge Street. A New Mexico state timber management officer, Mary Stuever will discuss the condition of our forests. March 22 -- 4:00pm -- "Beoga" -- Event takes place at the Historic Ilfeld Auditorium on the New Mexico Highlands University Campus. Traditional celtic music from Northern Ireland. Gaelic for lively, this fine band very much fits that description. General addmission is $12. Students with valid ID and children 10 and under will be charged $6. March 23 through May 15 -- Faces of Woman -- This is a favorite event of many Las Vegans and is sponsored by the Las Vegas Arts Council. It is being held at the OK Cafe, 140 Bridge Street, viewing from 10:00am - 4:00pm. The reception for this event will be held on April 11 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the OK Cafe. The show's juror for this year will be Chuck Zimmer, a working artist who is currently the program manager for New Mexico Arts, Art in Public Places program with the state. March 25 -- 7:30pm -- “Cineflix in Ilfeld” featuring “Twilight” -- Rated PG-13. Based on Stephanie Meyer’s best selling Novel, Twilight follows the saga of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), who moves to a small town to Live with her father. At school she meets Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a mysterious classmate who reveals himself to be a 108 year old vampire. Despite his cautions, Bella falls in love with Edward which endangers her life when a coven of bloodsuckers arrive to challenge Edward and his family. Admission is FREE and open to the public.
