Eight year-old Bruno is the sheltered son of a Nazi officer whose promotion takes the family from their comfortable home in Berlin to a desolate area where the lonely boy finds nothing to do and no-one to play with. Crushed by boredom and compelled by curiosity. Bruno ignores his mother’s repeated instruction not to explore the back garden and heads for the “farm” he has seen in the near distance. Tickets: General Admission $10 and student $5. Benefit performance for the Tri-County Family Justice Center in Las Vegas. This is a comical and moving play by Eva Ensler, and is performed annually in over 400 cities and 40 countries. It seeks to raise awareness and funds to help violence against women and girls. Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston go to the dogs with Marley & Me, a tale of a couple embarking on the adventure of marriage, career, family and the world’s worst dog. At least that’s how writer and newlywed John comes to describe his blonde lab, Marley, when he takes the puppy home and finds that the fluff-ball has an uncanny ability to eat and/or destroy just about anything. As years go by, John and his wife, Jennifer, contemplate having babies and moving across the country, while Marley grows……. Admission is FREE and open to the public! April 9 -- 5:15pm -- Sustainable Las Vegas -- This is next meeting of Sustainable Las Vegas (the local chapter of the New Mexico Solar Energy Association). Joe Whiteman will present ideas for an Outdoor Lighting Initiative. He will talk about how we can enhance our dark skies and save money at the same time, whether as individuals, schools, hospitals, businesses, or the city. As usual, we will meet at Digital Arts Photography Studio at 428-A Grand Avenue, (second floor). The May meeting will feature Eileen Mulvihill discussing bio-fuels, especially algae, as alternate sources of energy. The June meeting will address wind energy production. April 14 & 15 -- 9:00am to 3:00pm -- Kid, Kow, and More -- This is a fun event targeted at elementary kids and will be held at the Santa Fe Trail Event Center. The Center is located at corner of Airport Road and Road 250. The displays and demonstrations at this event show kids the many contributions that animals add to our lives. There will be a dairy milking demonstration, a entomology (insects) display with a lecture, a sheep shearing demonstration and the rolling river water trailer. Ani Mi'amin (Hebrew for "I believe") is a powerful and thought-provoking modern dance piece exploring the impact of the Holocaust on American Jews. Dynamic and emotional movement is threaded together with poetry and video testimonies from Holocaust survivors and children of survivors. April 16 -- 7:00pm -- 'Little Women of the North': The Woolsey Sisters as Nurses during the Civil War -- The National Park Service and Fort Union National Monument announces its’ monthly “Glimpses of the Past” presentation. The program will be held at the Citizen’s Committee for Historic Preservation/Santa Fe Trail Interpretive Center, 116 Bridge Street in Las Vegas. The talk will address the overall importance of women serving as nurses during the Civil War and the resistance many of them encountered as they tried to influence medical policy and oversee the care of sick and wounded soldiers. By focusing on the correspondence that passed between the Woolsey sisters as they transformed themselves from patriotic Northerners into seasoned hospital nurses, I will describe some of the points of tension that emerged as a result of their participation in the war and explore the unresolved questions that remain at the war's end. Having challenged the boundaries of gender and class, how would these dedicated women reposition themselves in the postwar world? April 22 -- 3:00pm -- Getting Paid to Talk: Making Money with Your Voice -- An introduction to Voice Acting Class, offered through Luna Community College. Today, people just like you use their voices professionally for commercials, audio books, training videos, educational material, the Internet and more. This course is an adult education class taught by the voice acting professionals from Voice Coaches, an industry leader in voice acting training with students all over the country.From the basics of getting started, all the way through working in the studio, recording a demo, and landing jobs, our expert will thoroughly introduce you to this exciting field. Class attendees will even have an opportunity to record a mock commercial under the direction of our producer. April 25 -- SynergyFest -- SynergyFest, now in its 6th year and it's purpose is to bring people and organizations together with a goal of increasing the use of alternative energies and creating a more sustainable community. This year's event will be at Memorial Middle School and feature their solar powered greenhouse, the Sunshine Kids Village, local entertainment, workshops and a solar oven competition. SynergyFest is now taking applications for vendors and non-profits. Non-profits may have a table for free. For-profit vendors have varying prices. Please see the application below for details. April 25 -- 10:00am to 4:00pm -- 15th Annual Pir Maleki Memorial Chess Tournament -- The tournament comes to United World College-USA in Montezuma, and area chess players are invited to attend! More than two dozen individual trophies and medals in the three scholastic sections will be awarded. Everyone plays 4 games. Advanced entries must be postmarked by Monday, April 20. Adults, as well as our stronger youth, are welcome to play in the three upper sections. Last year the tournament had 105 players of whom 75 were under age 19. The entry fee is low but an annual membership in the US Chess Federation is required. Go to www.uschess.org and select Join/Renew. Youth memberships range from $16 to $32. The Tournament is offering a $5 discount on the entry fee for residents of Colfax, Harding, Mora, San Miguel and Union Counties.
